Wes’ 3D History (abridged) As a child of eight years, I was captivated by the magic of the 3D movies and comics of the early '50's, and determined to do it myself someday. I soon learned anaglyph drawing, and by age 13, I was taking stereo shots with my little Brownie camera and mounting the cropped prints in pairs for viewing with a device I built from Tinker Toys® and toy binocular objectives. 3D movie-making was accomplished a few years thereafter. By the 1970's I was shooting stereo slides, and creating successful photographic anaglyphs. Since I had been drawing anaglyphs for years, it was just an academic exercise when I bought a book on a fail-safe method of drawing anaglyphs in the mid-‘80’s. What struck me as unusual in the book was that all the simple line drawings of geometric figures and such were distorted to be viewed at an inclined angle. Almost immediately, I started thinking how wonderful it would be to reproduce real objects photographically in a similar way so that they appear to actually be there on the table. My breakthrough happened in the spring of 1993 with my first prototype: a demitasse coffee cup and saucer with a spoon and a partially unwrapped chocolate bar. My parents were still alive then, and were so enthusiastic at the result that I thought this might have possibilities. I have since refined the process considerably, taking it into the digital realm in 1997, and exploiting this unique process to new ends: mixing dissimilar scales into the same scene to heighten interest and novelty, adding reflections above and below the horizontal plane, high-speed sports photography, auto-animation of subjects, and reproducing life-size human models in color. My patent for my process issued in May 2002. I've trademarked the term "Phantaglyph"® to identify my images, and "3D ON THE LEVEL"® as a business service. I see this as a powerful print advertising tool with tremendous “WOW” factor because it can simply do what no other media can do: place a virtual product right in front of you, inexpensively, when nothing is there but a sheet of paper. There are yet several new concepts I plan to explore within this unique and challenging art form. My website is: www.3d-onthelevel.com. I have also designed and built several camera adapters to facilitate stereo photography. I am also licensed in the Stereojet® vectographic process, and have combined that process with my Phantaglyph® image process to create colorful images that are viewed with linear polarized glasses. I am now working on a new form of autostereo high-definition television. Click here to return to Bios menu | |
