David Starkman's interest in stereo photography began innocently enought at a garage sale in 1976, when he, along with his wife and partner Susan Pinsky, discovered the excitement of 3-D photography after purchasing a box of View-Master reels. That was the beginning, and they have been enjoying every aspect of 3-D ever since. They published a 3-D hobbyist newsletter "Reel 3-D News" from 1978 to 1980. This led to the production of their "3-D Catalog", which operated full-time from 1984 to 2004 selling 3D supplies at www.reel3d.com. Reel 3-D is currently doing only wholesale sales. Since he began personally shooting 3-D in 1976, David has the attained the status of 4-stars in international PSA (Photographic Society of America) stereo competitions. He is an Associate of the PSA (APSA), and a past president of the Stereo Club of Southern California (www.la3dlclub.com) and has held various director positions of SCSC during the past three decades. He is currently the Technical Director for the club. In 1982-83 he worked at 3-D Video Corporation, marketing 3-D glasses for the first wave of broadcast anaglyph television broadcasts. During 1983-84 he worked with Chris Condon at Stereovision International, marketing the projection equipment for theatrical over/under 35mm 3-D film projection. In 1989 Reel 3-D Enterprises, Inc., received the National Stereoscopic Association Invitational Award for "exceptional foresight in preserving the historical heritage of our stereoscopic past". In 1995 David & his partner Susan Pinsky each received the National Stereoscopic Association's William C. Darrah Fellow Award "for distinguished scholarship and extraordinary knowledge of stereoscopy". David has been a contributing editor to "Stereo World" magazine since 1981 and has attended nearly every National Stereoscopic Association annual convention since 1984. David is also a member of the Stereoscopic Society of Great Britain and the International Stereoscopic Union. Since 1983 David, and his partner Susan, have presented numerous 3-D slide shows (and more recently digital 3-D image shows) at these conventions. In 2004 David began shooting with twin digital cameras, and has used this format almost exclusively since that time. Since 2007 David has been seriously involved with digitial 3-D image projection using twin DLP projectors. In 2008 he recieved the "Best STEREO WORLD Article on Modern Stereoscopy" award from the National Stereoscopic Association for his article "A Beginner's Guide to Digital 3-D Projection" (published in STEREO WORLD Vol. 33, Number 4). David has been a resident of Culver City, CA since 1986. His email address is reel3d@aol.com Click here to return to Bios menu | |
